RJ - Emperor Penguins (Science & UTW)

Date: 22nd Jan 2024 @ 8:25am

This week, we had an exciting visitor in our classroom. A penguin egg appeared and we had to take care of it to see if we could grow our own baby penguin. After taking very good care, the penguin hatched and we had another member in our class. We learned lots of new facts about emperor penguins - they are almost as tall as us! Following this, we explored the lifecycle of a penguin and created our own cycle using our new friend.

We also explored how penguins and other animals keep warm in the winter. We know lots of animals hibernate but penguins have a thick layer of fat called blubber. We completed an experiment to show what it feels like to have blubber - we could not feel the freezing cold water.

RJ - Christmas (RE & UTW)

Date: 16th Jan 2024 @ 2:10pm

This week we have been looking at the Nativity story that Christians believe. We explored the different people from the story and why Christian's celebrate Christmas.

The children had a go at retelling the story in the role play area and using the small characters from the small world area.

RJ - Chinese New Year (UTW)

Date: 16th Jan 2024 @ 2:05pm

We have been exploring all the traditions of Chinese New Year and even had a go at dragon dancing.

We also worked as teams to build dragon heads using all of our collaging and joining skills.

RJ- Diwali (UTW)

Date: 16th Jan 2024 @ 2:01pm

This week we have been exploring the celebration of Diwali, the festival of light. We looked at why Diwali was celebrated and the story of Rama and Sita.

We had our own Diwali celebration and the children made diva lamps out of clay and decorated them in bright colours and glitter.

RJ - Birthdays (DT & UTW)

Date: 21st Nov 2023 @ 1:53pm

This week the children have been exploring birthdays. We began our week by sharing how we each celebrate our birthdays and how we have different family traditions. We also explored how different people around the world celebrate their birthdays.

We then created our own birthday cakes. We explored the different ingredients we need to make our cakes and looked at the texture of each of them. We looked at using our counting skills to measure out the ingredients and combined all the materials together.

Once the cakes were cooked, we explored our senses by smelling, tasting and feeling our cakes.

RJ - Bonfire Night (History and UTW)

Date: 21st Nov 2023 @ 1:49pm

This week we have been exploring bonfire night celebrations. We learned all about Guy Fawkes and why we celebrate bonfire night with fireworks. The children recorded and told us facts they had learned about Guy Fawkes. We recorded these on an outline of his body and the children drew their own ideas of what Guy Fawkes was like.

We also explored how to stay safe during bonfire night and around fire. The fire service came into school and gave us lots of advice on how to stay safe around fireworks and sparklers. We even had the chance to look at the fire truck and have a go at using the hose.

RJ - Shadows (Science and UTW)

Date: 3rd Nov 2023 @ 3:11pm

This week we have been exploring the topic of halloween. The children completed an investigation to see if light can travel through all materials. The children recorded the results of their investigation. Following this, we discussed the transparent and opaque materials and that opaque materials will create a shadow as it blocks the light.

The children had a go at investigating shadows and creating their own halloween shadow puppets. The children put together performances as a group using their halloween puppets.

RJ - People who help in our community (UTW)

Date: 3rd Nov 2023 @ 3:07pm

This week the children loved role playing with our hairdresser resources and really took on the role to help the people within their community.

We also explored bin collectors and how they help the local area. We were on a mission to help clear all the rubbish from around school.

RJ - Autumn (Science and UTW)

Date: 3rd Nov 2023 @ 3:03pm

This week the children have been exploring autumn. We looked for signs of autumn and learned all about hibernating animals. The children created their own leaf men based on our literacy book that week using natural autumnal resources they had collected themselves from their autumn walks with their families.

We also had the opportunity to use the iPads to take photos of autumn. We learned how to hold the iPad safety and how to navigate the camera app. Have a look at some of our amazing photos.

Food Bank Charles Thompson Mission Charity

Date: 11th Oct 2023 @ 4:10pm

We have been blown away by the amount of food that the families of Townfield have generously donated to Charles Thompson Mission charity! When the donations were collected on Tuesday, the volunteers from the charity said that our school had provided the biggest harvest that they had received this year! We thank you all very much for your ongoing support and generosity. You have helped so many people in need this harvest season.

RJ - Colour mixing

Date: 3rd Oct 2023 @ 5:24pm

This wee we brought family photos in to school and we discussed these as a class. We then drew our families and learnt that every family is different.

The next day, we learnt about primary colours  and secondary colours. We had lots of fun mixing primary colours of paint to create secondary colours. From this, the children were able to mix colours independently to paint their family pictures.
