Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. We want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them.In 2022, we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of World Book Day – with the message for all children ‘you are a reader‘! It will be filled with lots of exciting, celebratory ways to promote reading for pleasure on World Book Day, and all-year round. Today we were able to dress up as some of our favourite characters and tell our stories to one another.
2S - DT: Textiles - Joining Techniques
Date: 3rd Mar 2022 @ 4:55pm
In today's lesson, we revisited the joining techniques for textiles that we had spoken about on Tuesday and Wednesday. Although there are quite a few joining techniques, we focused on seeing, gluing and stapling.
First, we learnt how to thread a needle with cotton (this was very challenging for most of us). We then used this to join two pieces of felt together with a running stitch. It was very tricky but we all persevered with it. One of us even managed to accidentally sew our pieces of felt onto our World Book Day outfit!
The other techniques, gluing and stapling were thankfully much easier :)

On Monday, we started a new book called 'Jellybean' about a girl called Annabelle who loves animals and is desperate for a pet of her own. Her first pet is an elephant but he ruins the garden so has to leave. She then gets a sheep whose bleating keeps Annabelle's family awake all night. After that, she gets a hamster and everything is fine until one day, whilst mum is brushing her teeth, the hamster runs right up the leg of her jeans. In the end, Annabelle settles for goldfish who she names Jellybean.
on these photos, the children are taking it in turns to read a page from the story. We are focusing on speed, fluency and expression.

World Book Day
5C had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day. The children all looked fantastic in their costumes and celebrated with different activities such as researching authors and designing their own book covers. The highlight of the day, by far, was a fantastic afternoon spent reading with class 2MB. Each child buddied up with a Year 2 and they shared a story together. It was lovely to see the empathy and kindness displayed from Y5 and they represented themselves brilliantly.

RD-Chinese New Year (Understanding the World)
Date: 3rd Mar 2022 @ 1:47pm
This week we have been exploring Chinese New Year. We have been very busy in our deconstructed role play area as we created a Chinese takeaway. We took orders over the phone and in person and wrote them down ready for the chefs to prepare.
We learnt that the dragon is a symbol of China and is an important part of Chinese culture. The dragon symbolises wisdom, power and wealth and brings good luck. After learning about the Chinese dragon, we made our own dragons using split pins. As a class we made a large dragon head in our creative area and used this to do a dragon dance. We also explored Chinese symbols and had fun copying these in our painting and writing areas.

Today we began our new PE topic, 'Striking and Fielding'. The weather was beautiful so we really made the most of it.
This lesson our objective was to track and collect a rolling ball by moving our feet to get in line and in front of the ball to be able to scoop it up like a fielder would.
We also did some throwing and catching to ourselves making sure our hands were in a bowl shape and we were keeping our eye on the ball at all times. When we were confident, we introced clapping whilst the ball was in the air!
