Today, we began our new History topic 'Neil Armstrong and Amelia Earhart'.
We already know lots about Neil Armstrong as we learned about him in Year 1.
To begin our topic, we started looking at the life of Amelia Earhart and how her childhood adventures carved the way for her future. She was always a very adventurous, daring child and at the age of 7 built her own mini rollercoaster which she ultimately crashed and told her sister that it felt like she was flying. She also saw the Wright brothers with her father in 1908 and in 1920, at the age of 23, had her first short flight in a plane.
We talked about the career path she chose and the fact she couldn't settle down in a job moving from nursing to mechanic to medical research before becoming an aviator.
We discovered that she was a trailblazer as she became the first woman to fly at 14,000 feet before being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.
We then had a debate about whether or not we would have taken the flight across the Atlantic. Based on our answers, we split into two groups and discussed reasons then nominated spokespersons to put forward our arguments. This resulted in some people changing their minds.
We then wrote down our reasons in our History books (see two examples in photos).

Today, we were looking at language features of our 'model' text. We identified: adverbials of time, statements, questions, exclamation sentences, commands and noun phrases. We also discussed how these features can improve our writing.
2S - Music: Dynamics and Timbre
Date: 15th Mar 2022 @ 8:46pm
In this week's music lesson, we used our untuned percussion instruments to learn about 'dynamics' and 'timbre'. The children began to understand that all instruments have their own unique timbre (quality of their musical note) and that composers use this, together with dynamics (volume) to express different emotions in their music.
We used our instruments to play along to 'Once a man fell in a well', the song we learned last lesson.

We had lots of fun learning to play 'Once a man fell in a well'.

We have been learning to read music and play 'Once a man fell in a well'.
RD-Under the Sea Dance (Physical Development/PE)
Date: 15th Mar 2022 @ 8:11pm
This half term our PE unit is Dance. We have been learning to use counting to stay in time with the music and communicate idea through movement.
Today we created a class dance called Under the Sea. We created a sequence pretending to be a fish, then an octopus and then a crab. We then performed our final dance in small groups.

Toys
This week we have been exploring toys from the past and present. We had a special visitor come in to speak about toys in the past and games they used to play. The children were able to ask questions about these and got a hands on experience with some old and new toys. From exploring the toys from the past and present we noticed that there are a lot of differences but also some similarities.

Ducklings
Understanding the World/Science/History
We have LOVED having our ducklings hatch over the last couple of weeks. Nursery have been amazing at looking after them, they have learnt about their need for water, food and a warm comfy bed. The children have also experienced real time hatching and used their first-hand experiences to learn about the life cycles of ducks and hens. They have evidenced their knowledge through some beautiful mark making. They especially loved watching the ducklings taking their first swim. Well done all our Nursery duckling mummy’s and daddy’s.

This week RCD have been looking at making 10 again. We looked at money, missing numbers and different ways of making 10.
Date: 14th Mar 2022 @ 1:31pm
This week RCD performed under the sea dances. They went into groups and created dance moves which represented waves, jellyfish, sharks and fish. We even had some solo performers.

In this week's lesson, we created our own class pictogram based on our favourite colours. We then answered questions about what we could see from the pictogram. After this, we created our own pictograms on iPads using j2e.com, based on how teachers get to school. We then answered questions about the data and uploaded what we had done to Seesaw.
2MB - Making our finger puppets
Date: 12th Mar 2022 @ 8:05pm
We had a fantastic Friday afternoon this week making our finger puppets in DT. The children were so excited to try and recreate their designs. All the children were fantastic at sharing the resources and helping each other with more fiddly details. It was also lovely to hear how eagar the children were to bring the puppets home to share with you. Well done Year 2.

Role play - Toy shop
This week we have been learning all about toy shops. We have discussed what a toy shop looks like, what they sell, what to bring if you are visiting the toy shop and the different jobs that are in the toy shop. We made our own toy shop in our deconstructed role play area and we had lots of fun labelling the toys, being the shop keeper, buying toys, writing shopping lists and receipts.
2S - PSHE: Risks and unsafe situations
Date: 10th Mar 2022 @ 7:24pm
We discussed what risks are and decided that a risk is when there is a situation that could be dangerous and put you in harm's way. We talked about why people take risks and decided that taking risks isn't always a bad thing; for example, firefighters and the police take risks every day to keep people safe.
We looked a range of different situations and whether we thought those situations were risky (and why) eg. playing unsupervised in a swimming pool, talking to strangers and crossing a busy road. We discussed how we could minimise or completely take away the risk in these situations.
We then talked about the meaning of hazardous and non-hazardous and linked this to items we might find at home. We worked as a class to identify and sort common household items that are hazardous and non-hazardous.
Date: 10th Mar 2022 @ 7:15pm
Today, we added the decorations, details and features to our finger puppets/pencil toppers using felt, sequins, googly eyes and plenty of glue. We loved making these and really tried to make them look like our original designs. Have a look at what we created!
