Kenya
We have had fun learning all out the houses, animals, schools and foods in Kenya. We drew enjoyed drawing Kenya's city and village and was able to compare them both. We also made our own necklaces, adding African patterns. In the small world area some of the children created Kenya's city and village.

We started the morning off with an assembly on British Values and recapped what British Values look like in our school.
Next we had a drama session in the hall with Mr Chalmers and we had to role play how it felt to be treated because you may look different. The children really got into character.
Then we talked about racism, what it is, how it can effect people and why racism is never ok. We created a poster for this.
Next we talked about 'bullying' and why this is not tolerated. We watched a movie clip and each time we witnessed something wrong we had to squirt toothpaste onto a paper plate. There was toothpaste everywhere!! We then tried to put all the toothpaste back into the tube. We failed to do this. We realised that once you have said or done something it will be remembered forever and it can't simply be taken away. We learnt that bullying is targeting the same person over and over again and how this is an unacceptable thing to do.
After lunch, we had a lesson about LQBTQ+ and what the initials stand for. We also discussed how in the past people have been treated terribly for their sexuality and how this still needs to change, We discussed how important it is to celebrate and respect everybody regardless of their differences, The children made an origami paper heart and decorated it. They put a secret message in the back telling people to be happy and true to themselves. We swapped hearts with 4M so we have one to keep.
We had a fantastic day and learn how importance it is to celebrate difference.
Date: 8th Jul 2022 @ 11:37am
The children read the book My World, Your World by Melanie Walsh and talked about how people all around the world may be different. Here are some examples of what they discussed in class; some people may eat with a knife and fork and some may eat with chopsticks, some may wear a sari and some wear a coat and snow boots, some speak Spanish and some speak French etc. They talked about how it is okay to be different and we linked this with some of the British Values such as, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance. The children then got to go into Class 2MB to share each other’s work from Diversity Day. They were so proud of their work and had so much fun meeting the older children.

Following this we had a lesson about how and why the 'Pride Festival' came about and why it is important to celebrate and respect everyone regardless of their differences. We made a class 'Rainbow of Love' to celebrate our differences.
After lunch we we talked about racism, what it is, how it can effect people and why racism is never ok. We created bookmarks and wrote about our feelings on racism.
Finally, we joined up with a. Year 1 class and showcased what we had learned today.

RD- Exploring exotic fruits (Understanding the World/Geography/DT)
Date: 7th Jul 2022 @ 9:02pm
We have been finding out about some of the cuisine enjoyed in Kenya. Today we investigated some exotic fruits that grow in Kenya, this included avocados, grapefruit, apricots, figs and papaya. We observed them before and after cutting them up. We then had the chance to touch, smell and taste the fruits. We were impressed with how adventurous the children were and how much they enjoyed the fruits.

In our music lesson we have been answering the question ‘What is a musical instrument?’ We looked at different instruments, learnt their names and explored the sounds they make. We watched a band play and talked about
- The different instruments in the band.
- The beat.
- The changes in dynamic, pitch and tempo.
Then we played the song again and joined in with our instruments. We had to listen carefully and decide when to play loudly, quietly, quickly or slowly .
RD - African Music and pattern (EA&D, Art & Music)
Date: 6th Jul 2022 @ 5:00pm
We have been reading a story called, ' Anna Hibiscus' Song.' Anna lives in Africa and we have been finding out about this continent and some of the countries in Africa. We learnt that Africa has a wealth of patterns, everywhere you look you will see repetitions of shapes and colours, textures and lines laid out in all sorts of arrangements. It is a major form of expression, African patterns are popular as a means of personal decoration and a way of communication. We look at different patters and recreated our own. We also used the patterns to make our own necklaces.
An amazing dancer visited our school and taught us some African dance. We had fun joining in and enjoyed it so much that we carried on dancing in the classroom.

Thursday 30th June 2022 ASPIRATIONAL SPORTS CAROUSEL
Today we had an absolutely fabulous sports day. It was full of new sports and experiences that we thoroughly enjoyed. What a wonderful day! We all moved from one activity to another and we were never stood still. Every child in the school was involved at all times throughout the whole day.
Year 1 started their day off with an African dance session. This was a wonderfully energetic session during which the children experienced learning a traditional African dance from our special visitor. This was so much fun! But, it wasn't as easy as it looks. Take a look at the videos.
We then went on to the playground to learn some cricket skills from Jordan, who is a South African first team cricket player. He taught us how to throw over-arm and under-arm. He also showed us how to have our hands ready and to keep our eyes on the ball so that we could catch it.
We had another visitor, Pete, who is a rugby coach at Birkenhead Rugby Club. We learnt how to pass and catch a rugby ball, which uses a different technique to other sports e.g. netball. After cricket we went down to the field where we met with Pete. He is a rugby coach at Birkenhead Rugby Club. He told us that we have to hold it like a tub of water and pass it as if we are going to get our team mate wet!!! Once we had practised these skills, he then explained the rules of the game and we had a go! This was tricky. We worked in two teams and had a mini match, we had to pass the ball to a member of our team and then run as fast as we could without getting caught. If a member of the opposing team tagged us, we had to give the ball to them. If you didn't get tagged and you made it to the line, that is then called a try!!! (which is a point). Pete said that we were really enthusiastic and played brilliantly.
We had another visitor who taught us tennis. We learnt how balance the ball on the racket to help us with our control. Also, we practised hitting the ball to our partner using the racket. This took a lot of concentration and coordination. We had to keep our eyes on the ball at all times!
Dodgeball was a game that we had never played before and we loved it! We had to race our partner to try to get the ball first. This helped us to develop speed and hand eye coordination. We learnt how to play in a team against another team and we had to avoid being hit by the ball. We got better and better as time went on. We also had to learn how to lose gracefully!
After netball, we were all ready for lunch. The kitchen staff supplied a delicious sandwich, healthy fruit, a packet of crisps, a cookie and a Freddo along with a refreshing fruit juice for a drink. This ensured that we had enough energy to take part in some more sports in the afternoon.
Our next activity was in the woodland where we were learning all about compass directions. Here we had to choose a card from three piles; an action, a compass direction and a number. For example, South, 15, star jumps. We had to check the compass and turn to face the correct direction and complete 15 star jumps. We did lots of different physical challenges such as; front and back lunges, hops, squats, star jumps and many more. After this we had a bit of free play using the trim trail. Thank you Mrs Hancox.
We then had a very exciting event in the hall with a real Team GB gold medalist! Jaydon Paddock has won a gold medal for Great Britain in gymnastics. He is a brilliant tumbler and is still only 20 so hopefully has lots more medals ahead of him to win. He told us all about how he became a tumbler and how he became so good. He was so inspirational to listen to. He told us all about how important it is to be resilient, determined, dedicated and hard-working - all of these things are so important to us at Townfield. He also shared the importance of a good diet and lots of rest. He showed us his gold medal and answered lots of our questions. We then did some circuit training with Jaydon so that he could show us what his training workouts are like.
We had an amazing day and this is what the children thought about it -
"I have had the best day ever!"
"Can we do this again tomorrow?"
"I want to try some of these sports again!"
"I'd love to win a gold medal!"

Thursday 30th June 2022 ASPIRATIONAL SPORTS CAROUSEL
Today we had the most amazing and exciting day jam packed with LOTS of different types of sports. What a day it was! We all moved from one activity to another and we were never stood still. Every child in the school was involved at all times throughout the whole day.
Year 1 started their day off with an African dance session. During this highly energetic session, the children were fully immersed in the experience and were taught some of the different traditional African dance moves native to this wonderfully vibrant and diverse culture. This was so much fun! But, it wasn't as easy as it looks. To have a look at some videos please see below.
We then went on to the playground to learn some cricket skills. Jaydon, who is a South African first team cricket player taught us how to throw over-arm and under-arm. He also showed us how to have our hands ready and to keep our eyes on the ball so that we could catch it.
After cricket we went down to the field where we met with Pete. He is a rugby coach at Birkenhead Rugby Club. He taught us how to pass and catch a rugby ball - this is a different throw compared to other sports such as netbal and basketball etc. He told us that we have to hold it like a tub of water and pass it as if we are going to get our team mate wet!!! Once we had practised these skills, he then explained the rules of the game and we had a go! This was tricky. We got into two teams and had a mini match, we had to pass the ball to a member of our team and then run as fast as we could without getting caught. If a member of the the opposing team tagged us, we had to give the ball to them. If you didn't get tagged and you made it to the line, that is then called a try!!! (which is a point). Pete said that we really got stuck in and we played exceptionally well.
We were all getting hot and tired, so we went inside for a little break. We had snack, a drink and a visit to the toilet before staring our Yoga session.
After this we went back to the playground for a game of netball. We have never tried netball before so this was new to us. First we were shown how to pass a ball to a team mate and how to score a goal. We then got into two teams and practised our skills. We really didn't think that we would be able to score many goals due to the netball post being so high, but, we scored LOADS!!!! We learned how to attack and defend in order to keep and take the ball from the other team. We really enjoyed netball. Thank you Miss Rowe for teaching us.
Well, we had certainly worked up an apetite, so thankfully, it was time for lunch. We had our lunch in our classrooms, we had a lunch bag supplied by the kitchen staff that contained a yummy sandwich, a cool fruit juice, a piece of fruit, a packet of crisps, a cookie and a sneaky little freddo (for energy of course) Thank you Mrs Evans and the team.
Once lunch time was done, we headed out into the forest for our woodland session.
After this fun time, we headed down to the field to learn how to play rounders. Mrs Carey and Miss Butler demostrated how to bowl, bat a ball, score a rounder, field, back stop and defend the bases. We got into two teams and first had a practise. Mrs Carey was the bowler and we all had a turn of the other roles. We had a fabulous time and we got Mrs Carey out because she didn't keep her eye on the ball!
Next, we travelled to the other side of the field where we engaged in some athletics activities. We did javelin, shotput, relay races and sprint races (the ipad ran out of battery for our races tut!)
Our final event was with Jaydon Paddock. He is a TEAM GB GOLD MEDALIST in Gymnastics!! He is a tumbler and he is only 20 years old!! He was such an inspiration. First he told us all about how he became a tumbler and how he got to the level that he is at. He talked about the importance of being reslient, brave, determined, hardworking, dedicated, motivated and having a good attitude. He also explained how a good diet and rest also play a vital role in an athletes progression. We than had a Q&A session where we found out lots more about him, and he showed us his gold medal and Mrs Carey had her photograph taken!. THEN...... He did a backflip! It was SO high and fast! It was amazing! Our final stage of his visit was a circuit training session with Jaydon himself. He gave us a little taster of what some of his daily workouts involve. For video footage, please see below.
What a fabulous day we had!!! Here are some quotes from the children;
"This is the best day of my life"
"I have had so much fun today, I love sport now"
"Can we do this again on another day?"
"I hope this is what our PE lessons are going to be like from now on!"
"I want to do Rugby after school now"

As part of our English topic we watched a video clip about David Attenborough and all of his amazing achievements and successes with animals across the world. The children then had to think of questions they would like to ask Sir David if they had the chance to meet him. There are some great examples attached below.
